How to Save Money Grocery Shopping

The best tip for saving money grocery shopping 💳💶 You’ve probably already heard a lot of tips for grocery shopping: buy this not that, buy in bulk etc. But this tip isn’t about what you buy but HOW you buy 🛍️

This great tip is actually quite simple, and it saves both time and money grocery shopping. So here it is!

THE NUMBER 1 TIP FOR GROCERY SHOPPING:
Go grocery shopping only once a week

This tip I’ve learned from my dad. We always went grocery shopping on Saturdays.

When you go grocery shopping, you always end up buying a little something extra, something unplanned, something that wasn’t on your shopping list – let’s face it, that’s just going to happen 😉 But if you only shop once a week then that something extra will only happen once a week instead of 3 or 4 extra somethings a week.

Also, when buying groceries for the whole week you save time, as you only have to make ONE trip to the supermarket a week and ONE shopping list and then you’re done. And let’s be honest, do you really find the supermarket to be so interesting that you want to spend every other day there? No, not really!

And, as a bonus you have a beautifully stocked kitchen with everything you need on hand for the week. If that’s not going to inspire you to make some delicious and healthy meals I don’t know what is. Also, you can make it a fun cooking challenge by not allowing yourself to buy any new groceries before the end of the week. You have to use what you brought for the week. It makes you a great and more creative cook (this I actually how I learned to cook as a child)

This also makes it easier to plan meals for the week and avoid food waste. I don’t necessarily have all the meals I want to make for the week planned when I go grocery shopping, but I have a shopping list and I have certain things that I always buy which I know I can use to make different meals out of.

A few examples: carrots, broccoli, spinach, bananas, tofu, onions, frozen berries and veggies. I of course also always have a lot of dry/staple ingredients, such as rice, quinoa, oats, spices, peanut butter (!), condiments etc., in my kitchen and I always check if I’m running low in any of these before going shopping.

As you become more experienced with your weekly grocery trip you become more and more efficient, so that a grocery trip takes less than an hour and then you are done for the week and then you can use all that saved time on something more fun, like cooking 😉 When I was a kid, our Saturday grocery trips quickly became a well-oiled “run” through the supermarket.
